Beethoven: String Quartet op. 127 & Grosse Fuge op. 133 (Smetana Quartet 1961)

String Quartet No. 12 in E-Flat Major, op. 127

I. Maestoso – Allegro
II. Adagio, ma non troppo e molto cantabile. Andante con moto. Adagio molto espressivo
III. Scherzando vivace. Presto
IV. Finale

Grosse Fuge in B-flat major Op. 133

recorded 1961

A visitor of this site has pointed out there are two early recordings of op. 127 by the Smetana Quartet. In addition to the recently posted 1971 version, there is also a recording from 1961 (accompanied by the Grosse Fuge). And so we have yet another item in the collection of the Smetana Quartet's earlier Beethoven recordings.

The recordings were in good sonic condition (no excessive noise reduction, no clicks). They just sounded a bit thin, so I didn't have to do much more than equalization. Beautiful performances.

  2. I've done a quick comparison w. the Supraphon 2014 streaming version - your sound wins hands down. At last op. 127 1961 really feels like a warm, brisk hug on an icy day. Will be listening to it closely in the evening. Thank you once again!
